Happens all the time actually...particularly when a club is acquiring a guy on his final year. Thats why so many "rumors" dont become reality. Team A wants Player B, but player B and/or his agent say that re-signing with team A isnt likely unless its XXX dollars and years...team A cant live with that and dont want to give up the assets needed knowing they will lose player B.
As long as the team and the player are OK with talking to another team, then nothing wrong has occurred.

I agree, chances are Flames already had an indication from Florida that Calgary was one team Bouwmeester would be interested in. The 3rd and rights to Leopold likely wouldn't happen without some assurances from Florida.

Yup, but only because Devils fans weren't about to go after Brodeur for choking that series.

Just like the NYR wouldn't have traded for Erixon without knowing he would sign there in the 3 hours they had.

Odds are the Flames asked Bouwmeester through the Panthers. It was very much in Florida's best interest to cooperate with such a request as it netted them a warm body and draft pick in return.
The Flames weren't resigned to losing Erixon until the end, so for the Rangers to have such knowledge stinks to high hell.

I don't know why everyone thinks this is tampering. Did feaster make this statement? Typically, in a last second deal like this I would expect NYR to request to speak with the player prior to trading away three potential prospects and for Calgary to allow this as they have no chance of signing. Anything prior to this would be hard to prove...

With the kids dad working for the Rangers it would be impossible to prove.
I'm not sure it would even be tampering if the dad (not an agent) told the Rangers his kid wants to play for them and isn't going to resign with the Flames.

The Devils weren't a team that needed great coaching to make or break it. They did just as well before and after Sutter. Previous coaches trained the core to the state they were in when Sutter took over. I doubt the Devils saw his absence as something handicapping them like losing a 1st round pick is.

After bouwmeester was traded, the interim gm of Florida said Calgary was as at the top of the list where he would approve a trade too. I don't see why we would be on the list unless he wanted to be here long term. Sexton also said he was confident sutter would sign him, because he's crafty and creative. Unfortunate for us it got done.

Spoiled kid
This trade works in favour of the rangers, bet its erixons fault. He is a spoiled kid who should be thankfull to make the NHL. Thinks the flames aren't good enough and wants to live on manhattan!
Hope he gets crushed when he comes to the Dome!

I don't think this a Flames/Rangers thing. More of a Calgary/NYC thing...

I think it's pretty clear this is a Flames/Rangers "thing".

Fan 960 saying more new is to come out of this today from Duhatschek. Maybe nothing more than additional insight or possibly tampering charges being filed by the Flames?
edit: Eric doesn't like the way it went down and wants to know what really happened. Says it was a horrible deal for the Flames (not blaming Feaster) and that the Rangers are so high on Erixon that they think he will step in and be a top 4 defenseman right away. Said you can't prove anything but something stinks about what happened and it wasn't in the spirit of the collective bargaining agreement.

Listening to Craig Conroy on Fan 960, he said he talked to Backlund about Erixon and asked what was going on. He said Backlund did talk to him, and things just weren't gonna work (for getting Erixon to sign with the Flames0.

This is complete hearsay, but I have heard that Jay did not want to sign with CGY, and had premature discussions with another team. Darryl found out about it, and had Jay over a barrel.

That must be why Darryl was able to sign him for a such a cap-friendly contract. Feaster should find out who the other team was and trade him there.

IIRC, the story goes that Darryl matched what the other team was offering.

And we could have Ballard and the Bouwmeester would be the #5/6 d-man two games away from the Stanley Cup.

What about this would be 'over the barrel'... why would Jay care? If he wanted the other team, wouldn't he simply wait til July 1 and sign there?

You aren't allowed to have negotiations with other teams when you are still under contract.
