Arrested Development Almost Certainly Done
According to Variety:
"Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz says he will not be continuing with the series, throwing a major -- likely fatal -- monkey wrench into attempts to keep the Emmy-winning laffer alive for a fourth season
Showtime entertainment topper Bob Greenblatt made it clear in January that Hurwitz's participation in the show was essential to a deal (Daily Variety, Jan. 20). With Hurwitz out of the equation, Showtime is no longer a viable home for "Arrested," insiders said.

Wow, I never really knew why that show had such a cult following, I never really liked it at all, but every time there is even the slightest bit of news about it it's posted here and it's a big deal.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just think it's remarkable that there is such devotion to a show that I never really thought was any good, but to each his own I guess.

That's really disappointing. I knew I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up when I heard Showtime was interested in buying the show. I swear there is some kind of conspiracy among tv networks to keep every show that I like off the air.

the fans of AD mourn:

"Arrested Development," the critically praised but low-rated Fox show that won an Emmy for outstanding comedy series, as well as Emmys for writing, will not be resurrected on Showtime as rumors circulating for months have suggested.
A source close to the negotiations said that creator Mitch Hurwitz had decided after a lengthy period of debating an offer from Showtime that "Arrested Development reached its end, creatively, as a series."
I take the last part to mean you might see it again as a movie or limited run.
He also hinted that while "Arrested" may have run its course as a TV show as far as he's concerned, he would be interested in reviving the franchise as a feature film. [Variety]

That is very disapointing. Why Fox why! You always manages to kill shows that I like. I knew it was too good to be true believing all those showtime rumours. When I get the 3rd season of AD it can go along with the rest of the cancelled fox shows I have: the adventures of Brisco County Jr., Firefly, and Futurama.

Very sad indeed... so much humor and subtlety to that show. I guess watching the DVD collections will have to hold me. I hate FOX

Yeah it really worries me that one of my other favourite shows is on Fox, House MD. Although from what I have been hearing, it's still doing well, so I guess for now, it's safe.

It's too bad that the American public was too stupid to be able to follow a brilliantly written show since it didn't have a laugh track to tell them when to laugh.
One of the smartest shows of all time, which was probably its downfall. When people watch crap like... well, pick a sitcom on ABC or CBS, and ignore AD is really a sad commentary on society.

It doesn't help that moving the air-time and day around (akin to Futurama) is such a constant practice on FOX. I can count the number of times I saw promotion for AD on one hand.
I know the show isn't for everyone, but most of the people I know who have watched a few episodes love it.

After watching it (if you haven't seen it already) make sure you watch the outtakes. The Mal character is screwing around and spits out some lines that had me laughing so hard I had to keep rewinding it to catch what he says.
why did it have to end.

Why indeed.
The show needed the same chance Buffy got - it takes time to build an audience for those shows. Even someone like me that was a huge fan of Joss Whedon didn't watch Firefly until it came out on DVD. So I guess I'm partly to blame.
But what a great series, and the long-term potential of it was immense. Great writing, unique concept, great acting. Ah well - at least we got the movie.

Since this has turned into a thread for generally mourning the loss of quality shows, I recently "found" copies of the entire series of Andy Richter Controls the Universe. While the show now pales somewhat in comparison to AD, it was just starting to hit its stride when it was canceled and is still better than 95% of the stuff that has come on TV after it.
Edit: Rather than describe the scene, here is a copy I found on the net.

Good call Mike, I was a big fan of Andy Richter's show. I was another one that got bumped all over the place in the schedule and I believe it debuted mid-season which doesn't help.

At least Futurama is coming back, hopefully Sundays.
That would make Sundays the funniest night of the week.
Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, Kenny vs Spenny, The Trailer Paark Boys. Makes me forget I have to go to work the next day.
Hope one day a network relizes that AD belongs on Sundays.

If you're referring to the comment made by Billy West recently, he said it wasn't true soon after:

I saw Serenity at the theatre - a half empty theatre
I too didn't appreciate Firefly until I saw it on DVD. I watched the premiere episode on Fox, and this spaceship dropping people on a train looked stupid to me. I sure wish they showed it in the correct order like Joss wanted.
And I also mourned the loss of Andy Richter Controls the Universe. And I liked Greg the Bunny, but that kept changing nights. And just as I started to like "The Tick" live action, it was pulled. Watching Patrick Warburton talking to a bubbling toilet had me howling.
I can't believe Fox put one their most popular shows on a break for months. I wonder how Prison Break will do in its return?
Fox reall seems to know how to dick around their shows. If is isn't American Idol or Simpsons, it seems to hop all over the schedule until it dies.
