Default The World's Largest Indoor Ice Facility

This project looks pretty amazing. Renderings have been released for the Kingsbridge National Ice Center. This is a "repurposing" of the nearly 100 yr. old Kingsbridge Armory in The Bronx, NY. 9 sheets of ice including a 5,000 seat arena all under one roof!

Most of those came out quite a while ago and I dismissed them as I figured there was no way it would ever happen. The proposal was one of many to redevelop an armory in the Bronx, and 'a bunch of hockey rinks' just didn't seem to be something that would fly. And yet, they announced today that it will in fact be built, which is incredible.

There are currently only 2 facilities with 3 total sheets of ice in NYC (I'm not sure if Aviator is in NYC or Nassau County, either way it's far) and they are always full. I'm not sure if there's demand for 9 more sheets, but the location seems to be highly accessible from all over the region so it should work. I'm really excited to see what this opens up in terms of mens league options, there's not much to choose from currently.

That's cool! Doesn't look like much parking for that many rinks!

with the Islanders moving to Brooklyn, could this be a possible practice facility? Is the distance from The Bronx to Brooklyn manageable?

Parking for 480 cars apparently. Not a ton but you have to consider that there are 3 subway stops within walking distance and a good portion of people in the area don't even own cars to drive there.

More details here: http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2013/0...ice_center.php

It's manageable, but it would be much easier to stay where they are at Iceworx in Syosset.

There is nothing funnier/more aggravating than having to take your gear on the subway at a peak hour. It's a pain in the ass, but it's also pretty amusing to see the space open up around you when that good old hockey gear stench starts to seep out.

9 is bigger than 8. 750,000 sq ft is also bigger than 300,000 sq ft. Schwan also doesn't have a 5000 seat arena.

Calgary needs a couple of these. One in the north and south would be nice.
