Should Favre Retire?
I personally think that he should come back for one last season, and play for one more year. Unlike some people I think the Packers could have done better, but they have a young team. It wasn't Brett's fault. He isn't as old as other QBs in the league. Let's look at Steve McNair who has been playing for years. The Ravens are in the playoffs with him at the starting position. Let's look at some of Favre's stats now. He dropped his interceptions by 11 this season and has had at least 5 games where he has thrown for more or just about 300 yards.
Final call: He should stay for at least one season.

I'd like to see him go out in the playoffs, but he's gotta do what's best for him and his family.

He looked alot better this year then last IMO.
I think he still has the skills that if he has a decent team around him the Pack could make a run next year...and this from a long time Favre hater.

No reason to retire statistically speaking. Right in the middle of the pack for QB's this year.

Well when you've been Brett Farve putting up average numbers isn't much of a consolation. I think he can still be an effective player and the young Packers showed tremendous improvement as the season wore on. But when you've held yourself to such a high standard and you're as competitive as Farve being able to put up average numbers may not be enough to convince yourself that you're good enough to keep playing. I'll be interested to see what he decides.

He can still play.
It's a matter of putting his body through the work necessary to continue doing so.
The exact reason Elway retired when he did. He knew he could still play, but he just didn't want to go through the pain anymore. We'll see what Brett does.

He's now approaching Jerry Rice end of the career status. 2002 and to some extent 2003, Jerry was still a good player, but time caught up in a big way in 2004. I see Favre in this boat this year, and I hope he doesn't go out Theismann style underneath someone like Merriman or Peppers.

By good numbers, you mean #25 passer rating, behind such luminaries as Rex Grossman, Alex Smith and Jon Kitna. 16th in touchdown passes. He had the 4th most interceptions in the league, tied with Eli. 5th worst completion %. 8th worst in yards per attempt. The only stat he was above average was total yards at 6th. I'd say anybody but Brett, and you'd conclude he put up lousy numbers.
For note, Jerry Rice was 22nd in receiving yards in 2003 - still very respectable for a 40 yo receiver.

Well to be somewhat fair Rice was on a Raiders team that went to the Superbowl and had the NFL MVP at QB, a good offensive line and as well as some other offensive weapons. Farve was behind an offensive line that had three rookies, and got minimal help from the running backs for most of the year on a team that was clearly rebuilding. Farve probably performed like an average quarterback given the situation he was in, likewise I'd say Rice was above average in his situation. I agree that if he comes back he does open himself up to the possibility of seeing his play continue to decline due to diminishing physical skills. But Farve's not that old yet, he is 37 and not 41. If he's in the right situation he can still be an adequate NFL performer, maybe even above average. But if he's in a bad situation he does put himself in a position to look really bad as he can no longer make up for the deficiencies around him like he once could.

Of course he has earned the right and it seems that GB fans wnat him back so I guess it is the right choice.
If he were on my team I wouldn't want him back and would hope that we had a better option than him at QB.
But he certainly has earned the right to come back and if the team wants him back I see no reason for him not to. I think he is crazy to think that they will make the play-offs and that he is ripe for a huge drop off but he has proven smarter people than me wrong before.

I agree with Moon that Favre has earned the right to decide whether he wants to possibly tarnish his reputation -- however, it is pretty sad to watch a once great player significantly weakened and unable to give up.

If Favre wants to play, and the team wants him, then absolutely, he should not retire.
And in terms of going out on top, that is crap - for most of these guys, there is nothing like playing professional sports. If guys can play, want to play, some one wants them to play and they are not putting their lives in jeopordy, then giddy up.

And the packers will lose again.
I think he's had an amazing career but the team has to turn the page and move on. Over the last few years he has had games that show why he's one of the best but then just explodes and is a train wreck in others.

Favre is greedy by comming back. He is only hurting his team by staying. They need to get younger and start working on a potential QB for the franchise. He just wants to break records which is completly greedy of him.

Here's the problem though - the Packers don't have anybody to take over. Rodgers is brutal and unless they find a stud QB in the middle of the 1st round this year (unlikely), Favre is by far the best option they've got. And probably will be for another 2 years. The guy can still play - if the Packers improve again next year, they won't be taken lightly by many teams.

They were ONE win away from the playoffs THIS year. 8-8.
And I would suggest that the DEFENSE, not the Offense (you know, the part of the game he plays in) were far more responsible for the losses than anything Brett Favre did or didnt do this past season.
6th in the entire NFL in passing yards, 16th in the entire NFL in Passing TD's, more completeions than guys named Brady, Palmer, E. Manning GROSSMAN, Romo, Roethlisberger, Vick, Delhomme, Mcnair, Young etc etc etc.....
Yeah...he sure cant play the game anymore at all.
