New Cowboys a no-go
Looks like the new site for Cowboys has been put on hold. Personally, that site has never made sense to me, given it's proximity to hotels and residential areas. A development permit for Cowboys bar has been put on hold after the city's planning department recommended refusal of the application, according to an alderman.
Vickers really ought to buy some land in those parking lots off 9th Ave next to the rail line and build something. No one cares if you dirty up those areas.

And in other news... plastic surgeons are reporting lower than anticipated revenues this year.....

Well, that's too bad, isn't it?

Actually I hope they build a massive cowboys that can hold like 10 000 people at a time. That way the meatheads and barstars can all huddle into a steaming, sweaty sestpit of testoterone and quit holding up lines at decent places I like.

The surprising part about this is Vickers didn't move faster to secure alternate space and get the permit issues out of the way. He's known he'd lose the old building for a very long time.

I think that Vickers was under the mistaken impression that influential people in Calgary actually loved Cowboys, because they will go there during Stampede, and shun it the rest of the year.
BTW, what was the capacity of the 'old Cowboys'? According to the Herald story the new one was to hold up to 900 people. Also, anybody know if they would have been able to have an overflow area a la their yearly parking lot/tent area during Stampede?

Im guessing that in the past Vickers had more influence with politicians and bureaucrats at city hall. Vickers likely greased all the right palms and had his way with getting permits he needed. As the city has grown and changed so has the goings on at city hall. Its possible hes banged heads with someone along the way.
This is politics after all... so its safe to assume theres some politics going on behind the scenes.

I really don't understand the hate for this place, it was always busy, always full of hot women and I can't think of one bad time at that place in 3 years of living in Calgary.
My only beef with it was the price of booze, it was so expensive for some shots. (ex. good tequilla)

Vickers seemed pretty cynical about the whole thing on the news tonight, he was pissed that someone turned their back on him.
I say let him build it around Race City speedway or on the edge of the city, that way all the ass clowns can congregate without me having to laugh and spit at them.

Aside from knowing how to make money I seriously haven't heard any thing good said about Vicker's and I wont even mention what people I know who have worked for him have said.

I personally dont like or have ever appreciated Cowboys as a club. But to deny the club due to its location in the core is absurd. The location was going to be downtown, so for anyone to not want a club in the core for noise reasons needs to move to a small town or the burbs.
If one lives in any downtown core in any major city, one is to expect noise and deal with it. Some of the decisions this city council makes with respect to certain decisions really puzzles me. No wonder our downtown is considered a boring place to be at night.
I lived downtown up until a couple of years ago and never once did I complain about noise. I fully expect to not have the tranquility that one would have in the suburbs. You dont move or live downtown in the hopes you will have peace and quiet.
If that wasnt the reason for the denial, then I have no complaint, however if it is, I once again shake my head at this council.

you know, i agree with pretty much everything you said, but when it comes to getting rid of that cesspool of jokohomos and chunky turbosluts, any reason is good enough for me. classic case of the end justifying the means.

Yeah cause Cowboys created these people. I think they had a lab in the back, and would clone them and send them out through the bathroom stalls!

Mmmm...chunky turbosluts....
I work in the building across the road from the proposed new location, and I was wondering why no activity has been going on there. When the proposal first came around, the building manager brought a letter to all our offices asking us to show up at a public hearing to voice our disapproval. I agree that there will be a lot of backdoor work that will determine whether or not this occurs.
