CPHL Biography #11 - Hesla
Hesla – The Godfather of Air Guitar.
Musician, Born Aaron Archie Hesla on October 31, 1962 in Atlanta Georgia. Hesla is a Greek-born American rock and roll musician, best known as the Bass Player for the 1980’s Glam Band Entertaining Pants.
Hesla’s mother, Vicki "Booda" Hesla, was Miss Georgia in 1957, and his father was David Leonard Hesla, a Monkey Trainer. His family moved to Washington a year after his birth.
Hesla received his first bass guitar when he was four. At that time, he was listening to Deep Purple, David Cassidy and Crystal Gayle. He joined the marching band at Crown Royal High School and was beat up everyday of his senior year.
During the early '80s four band nerds from different schools were being treated at the hospital at the same time. It is here that they found each other and formed their band Entertaining Pants. Also during this hospital visit Hesla earned the nickname "Hambone", he refuses to explain where the name came from.
Entertaining Pants quickly built a strong fanbase and they released their debut album, Hesla’s Honeys in 1981, and follow-up album Aaron’s Angels in 1984 -- establishing the quartet as one of the biggest Glam bands of the '80s.
As the popularity of the band rose, Hesla also made the headlines with his numerous romantic involvements. He has been linked to Nell Carter and Mindy Cohn. He married actress Nicole Panter (best known Susan on TV’s Pee Wee’s Playhouse) in 1986, but they divorced in 1993 after Hesla's tryst with U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.
In 1995, he married actress Sandra Bernhard they would have two children (Donnie born July 5, 1996, and Marie born December 29, 1997). It was with Sandra that Hesla’s most famous incident arose. One of their private videos was stolen in 1998 and released on the internet. The couple had videotaped themselves during a sexual activity where Hesla was dressed up as a pony and usually had a carrot in his mouth.
Hesla released his autobiography “I’m the Hess!” in 2004. It has so far recorded over 17 copies sold.
Hesla is a supporter of animal rights and PETA. He recently donated a kidney to a frail rooster to support PETA's campaign against Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Hesla has been keeping a low profile as of late, so where does one go when they don’t want to be noticed? That’s right he became the General Manager of the Washington Capitals. Over half of Washington’s public doesn’t even know they have a CPHL team.
