Default Suicide jumper

Last night I witnessed a man jumping to his death from the 30th floor. he landed right on 10th Ave and left quite a substantial mess. Someone mentioned this is actually quite common in Calgary (suicide that is). I find that quite disturbing, why don't these people look for help, becasue as far as I know there is so much on offer!

I had a similar experience, I was riding the metro (Montreal) to work and some guy jumped in front of it. It was a disturbing experience, to say the least.

When I lived on 7th AVE a guy jumped from the building next door and I was unfortunate enough to have seen the remains before they were covered up on my way home from work. This was during the Bre-X scandal which I believe cost a few people their lives.

I do feel sorry for you that you witnessed something like that.

Scrambler, Jordon:

There's a thing called "clinical depression" that can make it very difficult to get help when there's a much easier, faster, and guaranteed way out of your problems. I've never been suicidal, but I've been in pretty low places where logic stopped functioning the way it should.

I'm well aware as it's something i've gone through, my parents seperated when I was 2 years old... trust me I've been there, more than once.

My aunt commited suicide... not my real aunt, it was my dad's foster parents daughter but i've been there.

I probably have more experience on this subject than 90% of people on here. Help is there, it's hard to make the decision because at the time you feel crazy but it's available to everyone in this country.

There is no excuse to commit suicide, i'm sorry.

I saw a guy get hit by a car in Singapore and was completely decapitated. He was hit with such force and quickness that I'm sure he didn't have time to react, or was aware that he was hit.

Funny (or not) that your nickname is scrambler.

About a month ago a man jumped to his death off the high level bridge here in Lethbridge. It was quite the story.

What do you mean when you say there's "no excuse?" Do you think that suicide-committers (is there a word for that?) are asking you to excuse them for their irrational actions?

Or do you really mean that there's no valid reason? Perhaps there isn't a valid reason for committing suicide in most cases (e.g. jumpers). In the majority of cases, there are alternatives that would probably get them out of their troubles, that they can't see at the time but any rational person would. That doesn't change the fact that to the individual, suicide might seem like the best option.

To be blunt, you can't reason with a crazy person...and by any standard, one would have to be crazy to decide to kill himself. Therefore, if you really believe that suicide "shouldn't happen" in this country, then the only party that can be at fault is society itself, and those so-called rational people who should be helping out the crazies.

What are YOU doing to stop suicide?

If you want to talk about "excuses," why don't you focus on the people who are still alive....

Given your history, a person would assume that you would have more compassion for people in a depressed state.

The one thing that I always had a hard time understanding is how someone could do that to their loved ones....how could they put them through the pain of having someone they care about kill themselves.

But then one realizes that for some of these folks, they don't have loved ones. They are virtually alone in the world. Or...their so-called family are people that abused them or what not.

Bottom line, we should be hesitant when judging these people for we have no idea of what they are going through. Many are living a personal hell because of mental illness, or other factors and for this reason suicide seems like a logical solution.

And as Cube rightfully said...what are you doing to help? If its nothing than what gives you the right to judge.

It was rather surprising. Yes quite the story it was/is too. The rumors that I heard... some people just like to make stuff up.

That's a rather crass attitude. The mental state of people who are suicidal doesn't tend to lead to the clear choice of trying to get help.

I'd say that it's a selfish action, but that the state of mind is not one inducive to making the right decision. You probably don't see anything that will help you with your problems, or have tried clinical help and you're still in the state you're in. There's a lot more than just refusing to get help.

In the end, you've gotta pick yourself up no matter how low you feel to get help. In the states you've got to pay up the ass to get help, in Canada you don't.

To quote John Locke from lost: Sane people know when they're going crazy, Insane people think they're fine.

1) Recognize why you feel the way you do, and accept it
2) Get proffesional help
3) Use whatever method that works best for you to get better, and always be mindful of why you feel the way you do.

In the end, if you don't know why you feel the way you do, the only answer is to "escape" from the inner torture via suicide.

Getting help opens the doors to understanding and what you can do to get through it.

Similarly, then, there's no excuse for:

-alcoholism
-gambling addiction
-domestic violence
-smoking
-homelessness...

Why don't all these people just "pick themselves up" and stop being such a drain on society, eh Jordon?
