Does Anyone Like D&D? (General Tabletop RPG Thread)
I like to play Dungeons & Dragons. I thought that some other people on CP might like it to. I'm starting this thread to discuss our common hobby and post useful resources.
I'll start by posting a couple of resources that I can't live without
Best Fed NPC Generator is my goto for NPCs. It has a bunch of extra traits/quirks to make NPCs more memorable
I have a notion to propose a D&D style podcast on local community radio. How many would be interested in such a podcast? Would you want to participate as a character or GM?
Character creation software has finally leveled up - Hero Lab now supports the D&D 5th Edition SRD as well as Pathfinder!
With a Hero Lab license, you can create, advance, and play Pathfinder & 5th Edition SRD characters and NPCs just like you can on your Windows or Mac computer. We've adapted the familiar Hero Lab interface for iPad, allowing you to build characters just as easily as you can on your desktop or laptop.
Since Stranger Things came out my kids have been wanting to try D&D. I picked up the Starter Pack for them but haven't had the time to dig in yet. It might be easier to bring them to a D&D night or something to so we can all learn to play by someone who knows how.
Any good local resources for learning to play D&D?
I've played off and on for 38 years. Currently in two groups - DMing in one and playing in the other. Pretty crazy how popular (and socially acceptable) D&D has become in the last few years.

Paizo is playtesting a second edition of Pathfinder. I have mixed feelings about that - I adopted Pathfinder because it remained compatible with all my 3.5 books.
Man, I played alot of D&D when I was kid. I grew out of it by the time I reached high school. I lost all my D&D stuff when my parents' home burned down in '92. I did not know D&D was making a comeback. I do not know anyone who plays it. Even my buddies who used to be fanatical about it with me don't play it anymore.
I also used to love chess and backgammon and chinese chess and Stratego when I was a kid. Are they making comebacks? I also used to love Risk. That's the only board game I loved from my childhood that I still see lots of young people playing today.
I played it in college with a bunch of friends, we would usually drink Jack and play for hours. The problem with our game is that most of us created chaotic evil character and we spend most of our time trying to murder each other instead of continuing quests. The only reason to explore dungeons was to find more powerful weapons to kill each other.

I think a lot of the stigma is gone due to the rise of video games and that D&D has directly influenced some of the best games ever made, can't love Skyrim and think D&D is for dweebs at the same time. Plus, in practice it's basically friends getting together to hang out for cheap fun. I keep telling myself I'll join a friends group some day when life gets less hectic...some day....*gazes mournfully off into the distance*
I wish I had played it as a kid. We mostly played video games and a few tabletop strategy games like Axis and Allies. One friend tried to get us into Twilight 2000, but I wasn't feeling it.
I've listened to a few D&D podcasts, mostly Brian Posehn's Nerd Poker. I donated to it and he gave me a shoutout, which was cool. Dan Harmon plays on his podcast. His DM, Spencer Crittenden, is awesome. There's a TV version out there too.
I was a Pathfinder guy, but made the leap over to 5th edition D&D (I felt 4th was garbage).
I've got a group here in Taipei, there's a facebook group of active tabletop & miniatures gamers in the city that's really active, so I can always find players to jump into my game, or games to jump into as a player.
5th Edition is seriously awesome. Hugely enjoying it.
