Default Flames Fathers weekend trip

For the first time in a decade, the Flames' fathers will be joining the team on a road trip for their quick two game set this weekend in Southern California.

I think we've finally found someone who could go toe-to-toe with Brian McGrattan...

For those players whose dads couldn’t make it — such as Karri Ramo and Ladislav Smid — or deceased, as is the case for Jiri Hudler, Craig Conroy is around to be a surrogate father.

He was the Flames captain the last time they had a father-son trip in the 2002-03 season. They lost both games on that sojourn, which didn’t sit well with head coach Darryl Sutter.

“Darryl said, ‘That’ll never happen again.’ True to his word, it didn’t,” Conroy recalled. “We lost, but we played some good teams.”

Curiously, Sutter’s current team, the Los Angeles Kings, just finished a father-son trip, so times have changed.

“To get to meet some of their dads and see where they came from and how they were raised,” Stempniak said, grinning. “Like, ‘Does Brian McGrattan’s dad have the same personality as he does?’ Or where people get their senses of humour. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Added Colborne: “The best is the first day when you haven’t met any of (the other dads). You try to guess who’s dad is who. Some of them look EXACTLY like their son. And some of them look nothing like them. It’s always fun. We’re kind of guessing before we introduce ourselves.”

It really says something when you are looking at a picture of the McGrattans and Brian isn't the one you're worried about...

We saw Backlund's father at the Hawks game the other night. (well, there was a man that looked exactly like Backs and was wearing a number 11 jersey). Not really much of a story there - sorry.

I am glad that they are bringing back this tradition, but could they not pick a better a road trip? I get that the weather is nice in southern Cali, but i doubt the dads want to see their sons get beat bad.

You can see why Lee Stempniak is so smart. Looking at his dad, he has to be smart.

Nice of Connie to step up and take a free trip......

As an aside, I am sure that I read these trips count against the salary cap......anyone know for sure?

No, they're specifically excluded. They don't count against the cap, and they aren't counted against the players' share of revenue.

Such Traditional Hockey Practices shall not be counted in a Club's Upper Limit or Lower Limit, or against the Players' Share.

1. I think this is awesome, and
2. Another point for Hartley being the right coach for this team right now

Can't believe it's been 12 years since they did it. I thought it was an annual thing.

Word from Anaheim is that Hartley didn't like the order in which Baertschi Sr ate his meal last night at the team dinner and has ordered him to sit up in the press box this weekend to learn what it takes to be an NHL dad.
