Default Nikon J1 with 10-30mm VR Lens

I am interested in getting a new camera. I want something above a point and shoot, but smaller than a DSLR. Basically I'll use the camera for when I go on vacations, sports trips, skiing or golfing. I like being able to pull a camera out of my pocket, take a few pics and put it back in. I don't want to have to carry around a camera bag or have it around my neck.

I've had a Sony Cyber-shot for 5 years or so. It's a pretty thin camera that the front slides up and down to turn on/off the camera. The zoom isn't great and the picture quality is okay. I don't have any technical knowledge of cameras or photography. I don't know how to manual focus or change the settings much.

I am thinking of getting a Nikon J1 with 10-30mm VR Lens. Does anyone have any experience with this one? Would you recommend it or not?

Thanks.

I don't have any experience with that camera, but I started almost the exact same thread a while ago. I ended up getting the Canon G12 and have absolutely no regrets. Best camera I've owned and the best pictures I've ever taken. The Auto mode takes great pics in a wide variety of conditions and there are also tons of options for manual settings. Probably would fit in a big pocket, but I prefer to have it in a smaller Lowepro bag. There is the option to get different lenses for it too, for more zoom, but you need to order them online.

My input, hope it helps.

The new goggles also do nothing.

I'm looking at a Sony NEX-5N as my next camera.. it's one of these new mirrorless compact cameras with interchangeable lenses but it's sensor size is full APS-C compared to the J1, Lumix GX1, or the Olympus PEN ones.

If you want better picture quality than a P&S, you need a better sensor. The review from Engadget indicates it's not worthwhile buying that camera.

IMO, Photon has the right idea...that NEX5N has been really well received.
