1 in 8 Americans afflicted with alcohol use disorders
Pretty substantial increase over the last decade according to this study. I would imagine the numbers in Canada are probably somewhat similar. With the global economy the way it is (among other factors), I can't say as I'm all that surprised, but I'm also wondering if there are other cultural factors at play.

Wow, so 5-6 beers once a week puts you in the AUD group, or am i reading that wrong?

Not surprising actually.
I am always amazed at the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption in society these days. I guess these numbers would back that up.

Can you use smaller words? I'm pretty sure nearly your entire audience here has an AUD.

Alcohol consumption in Canada peaked in the 80s. People got liquored up more often when it wasn't a big deal to drink and drive. Alcohol used to be cheaper, too.

The way they classify it is kind of weak imo and kind of makes me feel like they're going to start dulling their messaging by putting just way too many people into the problem categories.
If someone drinks a 6 pack over the course of a BBQ get together once a week they're a high risk drinker? Seems excessive.
Personally, I rarely drink anymore, but when I do, I like to drink a case to stretch the legs a bit. Kind of like a 40 year old dude making sure he can still touch his toes on occasion.

Thanks for starting this thread OP
Didn't think I could promote my organization's work on CP, but here is the latest Canadian data on Alcohol hospitalization
Quote:
Alcohol leads to more hospitalizations than heart attacks do in Canada
On average, 212 Canadians were hospitalized each day last year for conditions entirely caused by alcohol. This number does not include people who were treated in emergency departments (EDs) without being admitted to the hospital.
Facts at a glance
- Males age 20 and older had higher rates of heavy drinking and hospitalizations than females in the same age group. However, among those age 10 to 19, girls had higher hospitalization rates than boys, with 63 per 100,000 and 45 per 100,000, respectively.
- The majority of hospitalizations were linked to mental health and addictions. Conditions related to mental health and addictions accounted for nearly 3 out of 4 hospitalizations entirely caused by alcohol.
- On average, there were more hospitalizations in the territories than in the provinces for harms caused entirely by alcohol. Hospitalization rates were higher in the west than in the east, with the exception of Nova Scotia.
- There is a paradox in that lower-income groups report less heavy drinking but have higher rates of hospitalization. The hospitalization rate for harms entirely caused by alcohol was 2.5 times higher for lower-income neighbourhoods than for the highest-income neighbourhoods, but low-income groups typically had a lower rate of heavy drinking.

4 drinks in a "sitting" for women and 5 drinks for men should be enough to give anyone a pretty good buzz. So they're saying if you get drunk once a week, it's considered high risk behaviour (and/or a disorder).
I can see it. Alcohol is not good for you (known carcinogen) and it's addictive. Not like, maybe sort of kind of addictive if you're prone to it. It's an addictive substance. And its use is totally normalized and even glamorized in society.
I think alcohol is the next cigarettes. We'll look back on this in 15-20 years and be like "holy ####, what were we all thinking?" like many of our parents do with cigarettes.
Or maybe they'll finally find a cure for cancer and then everybody can get back to drinking and smoking to their hearts content.

I would consider the golf more of a problem than the drinking.

It is easy to minimize this but alcohol use is a huge issue in Canada and costs the health care system an incredible amount of money. The number of people admitted to the hospital with liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, alcohol withdrawals, cancers, traumatic injuries, pancreatitis, and mental health issues related to alcohol abuse is overwhelming. Going through a patient's chart the most common history is that of alcohol abuse. As a society we collectively drink an absolutely absurd amount of alcohol.

According to this study, men need 2 drinking nights a week to stay healthy.
Honestly though defining someone who has 5 drinks once a week as having a drinking disorder reeks of Puritanism. The neighborhood pub isn't a new phenomena and society is hardly reaching some new level of alcoholism. People are probably drinking more because they are less likely to have kids or get married now.

As the title says, you can brawl twice a week too.
EDIT: Unless of course the only reason why you would hang out with people twice a week is just to get ####faced. Then yes, you have a problem.
