Senator owner rips Matt Cooke
http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/89...cooke-goon-nhl
Do you think the play was intentional?
I'm pretty surprised that he would come out like that and blatantly state such an insult. It's obvious that Cooke didn't intentionally cut Karlsson.

Melnyk is a moron, he consistently says the dumbest stuff out of any NHL owner in the media. Senator fans are really lucky that he at least has the sense to let his GM manage the team, because if he started to meddle like other owners Ottawa would start to look like the Islanders

Melnyk is an idiot and shows it once again.
Matt Cooke has certainly been a dirty player in the past but he is playing on the second line averaging the 7th most ice time for the Penguins forward. He may not be a star but he is far from a goon and far from a guy that "shouldn't be playing."

I kind of understand where he's coming from.
If a guy got convicted of drunk driving 5 times, and each time he got his license suspended but eventually got it back, and then was involved in an accident that seriously injured one of my loved ones, even if he wasn't drinking that time I'd be wondering why he was allowed back on the road.

I find it so goofy when an average fan rips an owner for commenting on his investment.
I think the post by Mike F is right, Cooke shouldnt be in the league.
I think Melnyk's comments were also directed at the protection given to Crosby and the politicking done by Lemieux, and then they still employ one of the most prolific injurers of all time. I dont blame him.

I'd be pissed off too, if my elite 22 year old d-man, who I am slated to pay an AAV of $6.5 million for the next 7 years, received a potentially career threatening injury from a guy who probably should have been out of the league a long time ago.....accident or not.

Sure he can be mad and maybe talk about Cooke's history and whether he should be gone for past transgressions but the phrase "for elite players" sure makes it sound like he is saying Cooke isn't good enough to play in the league and is only there to goon it up which is complete BS.
Perhaps instead of attacking the guy that accidentally did it he should be angry that his "stud" defenseman wasn't wearing kevlar socks. Perhaps he should be mad that more people in the league and PA aren't making these manditory.

His anger is misplaced. He should be focusing his time and energy to get the league to make kevlar socks manditory to avoid further incidents like this.

Pot? Meet kettle.
Matt Cooke is far from a saint and I wont defend him. That being said:
- Chris Neil
- Jarkko 'dbag' Ruutu
I'm sorry, if your organization employs Jarkko Rutuu for any period of time then you have no right to complain about anything.
You know who he is and what he brings.

Agreed. If you are going to go on a rant about the Penguins employing dirt bag players you better make sure your backyard is clean and that simply isn't the case here.

Neither of those players are as bad as Cooke though.
Going by that logic, the Flames could never complain about dirty players either (Neiminen, Simon, Marchment, and Lakovic - who was downright sick in the head).

Don't forget Rocky Thompson or even Bertuzzi. I can't say I was thrilled about any of those guys being in a Flames jersey although Neiminen and Simon played significant roles for the 2004 run.
I can say for sure I would not at all be happy with Ruutu being a Flame but at the end of the day what can you do? Nobody is going to stop following their team because they employed a bad apple. The point is that the Senators have employed shady players so they don't really have a leg to stand on in this argument. If it was Darryl Sutter saying what Melnyk said it would be a joke just the same.

anyone who has played any sort of checking hockey (even non check) has done the same thing Cooke has done while trying to pin someone against the boards. Cooke has a terrible rep but I honestly don't think he did it on purpose and it was just a freak accident. I hate to see what happpened but it could of happened to anyone and anyone of us could of done it to someone else too.

From Larry Brooks this morning . . . ...
* Finally, it’s odd, but I don’t seem to recall Senators owner Eugene Melnyk’s outrage when Milan Michalek used his skate blade to kick Dan Girardi in the thigh during a goalmouth scrum in Game 6 of last year’s first round.
Of course then the skate was on the other (team’s) foot — his team’s.

Loser organization. Instead of being galvanized and play harder, they just folded last night against the Leafs. And yeah if the skate is on the other foot, it's ok.
If guys like Cooke work hard to clean up and reform their game and then when something happens accidently they get blamed because they are them, what's the incentive to reform? He should just remain a dirty player right?
