Why is a midpoint relevant?

Flames with $20 million in cap space with a 19 man roster currently

Plus a good chance at least half of Markstrom's $6 million ticket is also gone by the draft.

They're also about to start the Stanley Cup final. Like who cares what their cap situation is next year, they're currently playing for the Stanley cup lol

The Flames talk about "weaponizing" the cap space? havent really seen them do that. Montreal does it and gets 2 first round picks for Monahan.

The thread is about 24/25 and I care because I don't want to go thru this nightmare next year.

Technically, the midpoint is the most-relevant thing because it's what is calculated from the past HRR values. The cap and floor are calculated relative to the midpoint.

Under the changes to the CBA after COVID, to calculate the cap you first calculate the midpoint of the salary range:
  1. Take the final HRR value from 2 seasons prior (in this case, 2022-23).
  2. Divide that number in half to get the Players' share of HRR.
  3. Divide that number by the number of teams in the league to get the per-team share.

This gives you the midpoint for the salary range for the upcoming season. The cap is set to 115% of the midpoint and the floor is set to 85% of the midpoint.

Granted, currently, there is a limit to the amount the cap can increase year-over-year at 5% (although, this is slightly higher than 5%), so the formula doesn't really matter until the growth in the cap has caught up to the growth in revenue.

Yeah that helped a little but it’s really just expected at the deadline. You don’t get much for it.

They need to turn some of this cap space into draft capital this summer and not waste it on veterans who won’t be part of a contending team.

very true, Montreal has some pretty bad contracts for example, if the term isnt too long, perhaps try to get that pick back.
