Holy Crap! Roy leaving the Habs was because of Vernon!
Elliot Friedman mentioned this in the 2nd intermission on the Fan960
This is a must listen!!! Just jump right to the 8:40 mark.
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/...reer-1.2434290
They met up at some breakfast place right before the game.
"Patrick you just have to get traded...... get out of Montreal. I left Calgary and it's great. The pressure is too much..."
That night was when Roy went up to the President and asked to be be traded.
hahahahah after the game Vernon took off to the dressing room and got the hell out of there asap! hahaha

haha. Vernie likes the S-bombs! He didn't want to incur the wrath of the media, but i'm sure it would have been the Hab fans who wanted him dead if they found out.
Him getting Hrudey in trouble with Darryl was awesome at the end. hahaha

Mike Vernon was famous for letting in bad goals at the wrong time. It was game 7 of the 1990 playoffs against the Oilers. Flames are up 3-0 and the Dome is so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. Tikkanen skates over center ice and fires one at Vernon with the puck going in between his legs. The Dome goes quiet and you could hear a collective gasp of here we go again. Oilers bank one in off Flames d man Frank Musel to win in OT.
Because of those bad type goals he became the whipping boy of Flames fans. First it was his mother who stopped coming to games and then later it was his father. ST holders were really hard on Mike and his parents couldn't stand the booing he got.

That series was a war. The final outcome was heart breaking, but I miss those series against the Oilers when both teams were contenders instead of the laughing stock of the league.

If he didn't make a couple of huge saves in OT of game 7 against the Canucks in 1989 the Flames would have no Stanley Cups. It goes both ways.

1990 was the Mike Krushelnynski goal. The one he scored on his stomach at the Great Western Forum.

Yeah, 1991 was the game 7 collapse against the Oilers (after Fleury scored the OT goal in game 6 and did the slide down the ice).
1990 was the BS no goal call when the Flames clearly scored in OT on Hrudey, then later the Kings scored to win it.

Vernon let in the odd bad goal, but he was clutch when it mattered. Fuhr was the same way. IMHO, Vernon should have won the Conn Smyth in '89. Not only did he save the Vancouver series, he decisively outplayed Roy in the final.

As much as I hate the guy - I would have given the Smythe to Gilmour.

Vernon was also the first Flames goaltender who could make the critical saves necessary to give the team confidence to beat the Oilers in the 1980s - in particular, the 1986 upset.
