2015 NFL Offseason Thread
I know we still have a few weeks left in the playoffs, but I think we can put the 2014 thread to bed and use this one for offseason news.
John Fox to the Bears is done apparently.

Might as well repost this in here. Even though I'm probably the only one that cares ... sorta

Sounds like Kubiak is the likely next Broncos coach.
Quote:
Ravens OC Gary Kubiak plans to take Broncos HC job if it is offered to him, per sources. Kubiak is believed to be Denver's No. 1 head-coaching candidate, so now it will be up to both sides, Kubiak and the Broncos, to share their football philosophies and reach an agreement when they meet today in Houston, where Kubiak lives. However, no announcement of any deal Is expected until Tuesday, after today's conference championship games and after Monday's Martin Luther King holiday. But all signs now point to Kubiak being named Broncos head coach Tuesday.

What exactly has Lane Kiffin ever been good at, besides being a complete lying ######bag? I don't understand how that guy keeps finding work.

Given how Baalke ran Harbaugh out of town you can kind of see why he would gravitate to a weasel like Kiffin as they have plenty in common.

Yeah, don't think so.
Fox and Del Rio were awful coaches and Kubiak is going to be a huge upgrade. The Broncos underachieved a lot this year and still won the AFC west easily.
They'll win the division again next year and make a run at the Super Bowl and certainly be more prepared in the playoffs if nothing else.
The 49ers might not be worse next season since they set the bar so low this year. That was an awful team.

I'm pretty fine with Kiffin leaving Alabama.

I'm sad that we don't have Bowles anymore... But him being a head coach is well deserved.

Are we talking about the same Gary Kubiak here? Kubiak consistently coached way too conservatively when he was in Houston, and an argument could be made that the Texans underachieved under him.

Not sure where you're getting the conservative label from? Haven't watched the Texans a ton over the years, but didn't Schaub throw those season-ending pick-6's a few years back on plays where Kubiak could have run the ball but didn't?
He had David Carr, Matt Schaub, and T.J. Yates to work with, don't really think it's underachieving to almost win a playoff game with the latter but he also did a great job in Baltimore with Flacco.
Here's a transcript of John McClain (Houston Chronicle) describing Kubiak in detail. It's a long read but if you're interested it sort of yanks the curtains back a bit. A lot to be excited about as a Bronco fan, not the least of which is the return of the ZBS! C.J. Anderson is the perfect one-cut back for this and having a 1,500yd rusher next year is going to help Peyton a lot, especially in play action.

So the 49ers paid a great coach, got immediate results and went to the NFC Championship 3 years in a row and the Superbowl once.
Which created great buzz and demand for 49er tickets. And which also helped sell seat licences and seasons tickets at exorbitant prices. But as soon as the stadium was done, the coach was undermined and fired, and the new head coach, who is has been a line coach on the team for 7 years is now one of the lowest paid head coaches.
It seems like now that the York family has its stadium and locked in revenue stream for a few years, they are returning to their miserly ways. I had hoped Jeb would follow in the shoes of Eddie D. Instead there appears to be another stretch of stupidity to be endured.

Going with Jim Tomsula is an interesting choice but he has tons of football experience and the 49ers really wanted to promote from within to keep that continuity.
From what I've heard, Tomsula is a great motivator and a players coach that has tons of football knowledge and the players respect the hell out of him. If he can hire a strong OC and DC it could all mesh together really nicely.
49ers still have lots of talent, especially on the defensive side of that ball. And the offense last year under Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh was pathetic, actually it was always near the bottom of the league under Harbaugh, last year was just pathetically bad.
Next year will be interesting to say the least.

Not sure where you think this upgrade from Fox to Kubiak comes from...certainly their history doesn't suggest it.
Fox Career record 126–96–0 (.568)
Kubiak Career record 63–66 (.488)
This hire is the epitome of ...meh

^Kubiak coached most of those years building the Texans. He's a good coach.

The history certainly doesn't support Fox as being any better IMO. Fox was 78-74 before getting to Denver. He was hired to be the anti-McDaniels and he filled that role admirably. Just about anyone would have fared as well with Manning as Fox did, it was his failure as a HC in the playoffs that cost him his job. Hopefully Kubiak can jumpstart the rebuild, get the zone blocking scheme back and utilize Anderson's skills. If Manning doesn't like that it's a real shame and then it's so long and thanks for all the fish. It's too bad next year is looking like a crap year for first year QB's but Denver will get a legit starter again sooner rather than later I'd wager.

You can't use a coach's record in a vacuum. Pretty much anyone could have gone 12-4 or 13-3 with the Broncos the last three years. Fox is a .500 guy outside of Denver and at the end of the day, what people don't realize is that Fox wasn't fired because he lost the Super bowl and the divisional.
He was fired because the team wasn't prepared in either of those games and was soundly outcoached in both of them.
Guessing you didn't read the article describing Kubiak. Read it. It paints a more detailed picture than wins and losses can.

Bears are going to have a good D after hiring Fangio.
With the Lions having a strong D this is just going to make the NFC North much more physical.
