CRTC orders TV ads to turn down the volume
Saw this story today and said "Its about f***ing time!"
http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/stor...ision-ads.html
Then I read this:
Quote:
"The rules we published bring us a step closer to our goal of eliminating loud TV ads," said Leonard Katz, the CRTC's acting chair.
|
I mean.. WTF! "one step closer"? How many steps are they going to take?
Why can't the CRTC just regulate ads by saying they have to be played at the same volume as the surounding tv program?
Stupid CRTC.. this has been going on for decades and now they finally do something and its j"ust one step closer to their goal of eliminating loud TV ads".

My understanding is that Part of the challenge is that ads technically are not broadcast louder than regular programming on an absolute basis (i.e. the loudest sound in a commercial cannot be louder than the loudest sound in regular programming). Therefore they argue that they are not any 'louder' than regular programming.
Ads have skirted the regulation however (creative response anyone) by increasing their average volume to be much higher than regular programming.
Of course my memory could be failing.

Yes. The whole strategy of boosting the volume on ads has been a nonstop BS parade for years.

If they don't yell, how will we know whose wheat field it is?

They're all Billy Mays' wheat fields.

I don't always get mad at commercials, but when I do, they're usually loud and annoying.

Shaw would lose about 90% of their clients if they were the only ones to make that move. I can't see it happening unless it was an industry mandate else it would be suicide for their company.

I've read a lot of stuff on CP that isn't true. What you just said is on par with this guy in my opinion....

I think they do it for the Shaw on Demand tv shows, but not for regular DVR recorded shows. I don't see how they'd be able to.
If they ever did stop ffwding commercials I would cancel cable no doubt.

If shaw did that they would lose most of their customers. So....I'm pretty damn sure they're not doing that.

Shaw's own advertisements are the loudest ads by far, I have to lunge for the remote to mute the sound so I don't wake my kids.

I used to watch Southpark a lot on the Comedy network years ago. It seemed to me that they lowered the volume of the show. That way the volume of the commercials are legal.

The ads aren't "louder" than other programs. That is they don't turn up the volume from what you have set your TV/stereo to. Their trick is to use the high-end of the sound levels to SCREAM at us. A TV show will have highs and lows as you watch. Talking will be at a moderate level, whispers much quieter and explosions louder. You set your sound so the talking seems normal, the whispers are audible and the explosions loud. Then the commercials come on and the talking is at explosion level coupled with music and whatever else. Somehow that's supposed to get us to buy more. Buy more now. Buy. And be happy.

This may be true, but is there no way to regulate volume levels to match tv show speaking level volumes?
Maybe make a max commercial volume level that is lower than regular tv show volume to slide the scale the other way- so that when it's max it sounds normal?

Oh I didn't say it was ok for advertisers to do what they are doing. I hate it to. There absolutely should be a way to regulate the volume of ads and also the networks broadcasting from turning down the volume of TV shows so the ads scream even louder. Comedy seems to be terrible for that. A simple regulation that reads if a person's speaking voice exeeds X level in anything, show, movie, sports or ad then it's to loud and is rejected from broadcast. If you put your volume at 5 out of 10 then all regular speaking voices should be at 5. seems to simple to happen though, like most things with the CRTC. But yay we get more Canadian contecnt to watch that outside of hockey, CFL and Corner Gas re-runs no one does.
