Default Need help with Shaw HD problem

Really odd problem with my HD. Last night, we either bumped a remote or the kids were playing with it, but all of a sudden my HD went out and the TV defaulted to 480p.

After much troubleshooting, I could not find any settings to return it. Then, as I was pressing virtually every button, I hit the PiP button and magically the HD signal came back and it's normal (TV display says 1080i).

But now, while the TV looks normal (there's no picture-in-picture) when I press the guide, I get two side-by-side.

If I turn off PiP, it defaults back to an SD signal (TV displays 480p).

Shaw technical support guy had no idea. Said it was something wrong with my TV.

Any ideas? Of course, there's no video settings on my DVR to override or select HD feed.

And yes, for reference, I'm on an HD channel.

The remote that's in the equation, is it a universal remote?

What Shaw system are you using? Gateway? Single PVR?

How is the box connected to your TV? HDMI, is there any other connection?

Sorry, came back to post all that.

TV is Sony.
Connected through a Yamaha receiver (HTR-6260)
PVR is Motorola (DCX3400-M)

Remote is the one that came with the PVR

Assuming its HDMI between box and receiver, and HDMI between receiver and TV. Is there another connection between the box and the tv directly? Also what is the tv model number, I can look up the manual to see if pip has some settings that might provide a clue.

Yes. All HDMI.

Cable Box >> Receiver >> TV

Hmmm nothing in the manual about PIP http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4269995161.pdf

Are you sure you didn't toggle the 3D button?

I did not toggle the 3D. I know that because it went all funky when I was trying to sort it out and pressed that button in a long-shot hope.

It's really bizarre. And I'm assuming it's got to be something really simple, a one-button-push type of thing, but can't figure it out.

You picked the right code for the Shaw universal remote? I haven't experienced problems before, but maybe a button got mapped differently, eg) when you press the input button on the Shaw remote, it's really sending something else to the TV.

There used to be a hard boot menu on the old HD boxes where you hold down the menu button when you plug it back in. In there there are some settings for picture type. Not sure if thats still the case.

Otherwise have you tried resetting the tv?

Reset the TV, set it all up again and still the same problem.

It's got to be something with the box

Edit: Did like 30 mins with Shaw tech again, reset the box, changed out cables, nothing.

They also say they're not sending out a tech because tehy don't think it's a problem with their system. Which I can't really blame them.

I'm sorry if I'm posting the obvious here but....

On my gateway system, you have to configure it to broadcast in a certain mode (480, 780, 1080i, 1080p), is there maybe an option in the menu in the motorola to do the same? Because you feel this happened after hitting something on the Shaw remote I really don't think this is an issue with the TV persay.

It's been a while since i had the system you had so no idea if that option is even available in the menu, just graspin at straws here.

I guess the other thing is to try it on another TV if you have one. Or if you have another box try it on that TV. At least conclusively eliminate either the box or a TV setting as the issue.

I'm at a loss, but I hope you share the eventual solution when you come across it.

Just reading the manual, and it mentions a 'Front Panel Format Button' that toggles the video output. It also says there are indicators on the right hand side of the display to indicate the format currently selected for component and HDMI. Maybe check to see what is showing up on this instead of going through the User Settings through the menu?

There it is. I've been looking through virtually every setting through on-screen menus looking for the output. Sure enough, that was the problem.

Knew it had to be something embarrassingly simple, but it worked. Did not see that button before. Any why two Shaw reps didn't think of it either is bizarre, too.

So thanks.

That was the obvious thing I was thinking, but couldn't find a way to do it through the menu. In hindsight, it was on the actual DVR, so I just overlooked it.

This is our 3rd PVR and each one has been different, but at least it got sorted. Even if I look like an doofus.

Lol, well don't feel bad. I don't think I would have looked for an actual button on the DVR itself either. Especially after the issue was created by some odd button on the remote to begin with.

Glad you got it resolved.

Glad it helped. Baffling that it caused the issue, but all's well that ends well.
