Canes acquire Scott Darling from Blackhawks for a 2017 3rd
Chicago Blackhawks @NHLBlackhawks
The #Blackhawks have acquired a third-round pick in the 2017 #NHLDraft from the Hurricanes in exchange for goaltender Scott Darling.
edit: The pick is Ottawa's 3rd per Carolina's press release

Canes had 3 3rd round picks this year and get a head start on one of the cheaper goalies on the UFA market

Well I guess we can cross Darling off the list. He somewhat intrigued me but I wasn't totally sold on him so I don't think I'm too upset about missing out on him.

I wouldn't necessarily cross him off the list yet. He may still decide to test free agency.
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Should also mention there haven't been any talks yet between Carolina and Darling's agent. This was news to the Darling camp just now

So, what the strategy here is that they'll lose Lack to Vegas and sign Darling to be their backup?

Odd with two guys already signed for next year. You'd think they'd have to protect Darling now.

If they sign him, I'd expect them to expose both Lack and Ward and if one gets picked, keep the other.

Likely they figure Vegas is going to take a goalie from them. If they have three, they'll still have two after the expansion draft, no matter what happens.

There's already a stage show in Vegas for Eddie Lack: http://www.legendsinconcert.com/las-vegas

As long as the teams consummating a trade are no longer competing in the playoffs, they are free to make trades.

I'm pretty sure playoff teams are allowed to make deals too, just acquired players can't participate.

Even active teams can make trades any time. The only issue is that any player acquired after the trade deadline is ineligible to play in the NHL playoffs for his new team.
The Senators traded for Brandon Gormley on March 6 this season.

I miss the 10 years where I could make a comment about being traded to the Oilers any day out of the 365 days a year and still wouldn't be able to participate in the playoffs.

I imagine they fully plan on re-signing him as a 3rd round pick for a pending UFA is a fairly steep price.

That's terrible news. Would of liked Calgary to take a stab at him.

I want Darling on the Flames, hopefully he waits for free agency to explore all his options. With the Hurricanes he would pretty much be guaranteed to be playing on a non-playoff team for the duration of his contract with the exception of the odd lucky year. He also risks eventually playing in Quebec which might not be appealing for him.

Didn't want any Darling so glad he is off the board. This is Eddie Lack 2.0 for Carolina

Wouldnt the trade itself at this point in the season indicate they intend to? Regardless of the cost?
Whether they do or not is up to Darling at this point.
