Brandon Hickey signing watch. UPD: BU announces Hickey will captain team for 2017/18
There hasn't been anything credible, but lots of speculation that he might go pro now that his 3rd college season is done. He can go back for his 4th college season, but if he does the Flames draft pick rights will expire on August 15, 2018.
Should get word soon either way.
March 27th 6:30pm MT update:
News UpdateTreliving on 960 says they are actively trying to sign Hickey and to look for something to happen there sooner rather than later

Flames looking to restock the Heat D for next year? Sounds like they'll be cutting the cord on a few blueliner prospects.

The options are...
- Sign a three year ELC that starts immediately, burning the first year of the contract, and join the Flames for the rest of the season.
- Sign a three year ELC that starts next season and join the Heat for the rest of the season on an ATO.
- Finish his school year and sign a three year ELC that starts next season sometime this summer.
- Return for his senior year and sign a two year ELC next year, either with the Flames or wait until mid-August 2018 and sign with anyone.
My guess (based on nothing) is that he'll sign but not burn a year and join the Heat for their playoff push.

I imagine options 2 and 3 are most likely.

If Im him, Im signing a 3 year deal asap...there may be opportunity to play this season.
He's a kid they simply cant let walk as, IMO, he has NHL written all over him.

If the flames could get him signed that's some really nice defensive depth in the pipeline and for Stockton.

Lots of interest in the kid. I think it was Craig Conroy, in an interview, who said Hickey is a player other teams keep pestering the Flames about.

If two of Fox, Andersson, Kylington, Hickey turn out in to what we think they could be, we are in nice shape on the back end.

Can someone confirm whether or not he would be eligible to play for the Flames in the this year's post-season if he signs?

Yes as a draft pick of the Flames he was on the Flames reserve list at the trade deadline, so he can play in the playoffs - provided that his contract starts for this season and that means burning a year.
If he was a college free agent ala Josh Healey he wouldn't be eligible for the playoffs even if his contract started this season because he wouldn't be on the reserve list as of the trade deadline.

Well it's more nuanced then that as getbak noted half a page up.

Thanks. I thought there was some rule about them having to be on the roster at the trade deadline. I must be thinking of some other rule.
And thanks to Sureloss for further clarification.

I think the only reason he signs now is if he gets to play in the NHL this season.
Otherwise I dont see the upside.
FWIW, i've also been told by reliable sources in Edm that Hickey enjoys his college experience and not to be surprised if he stays to finish his degree.

IMO, Best Flames D prospect , along with Fox, not playing in the NHL .
Both have tremendous upside...top 4.

Take the money, son. Seriously.
Sign a ELC and your tuition is covered down the road. Your school isn't shutting down any time soon.
