The Redemption Of Karri Ramo
It has been a roller coaster year so far for Karri Ramo from competing with two other goalies for the net, to being waived, clearing waivers and being sent down to Stockton, to being called up again and being given the chance to be " the guy".
The last two road games in particular have been very encouraging for Ramo, although it is likely too soon to consider him fully redeemed. On Hockey Central today Corey Hirsch was saying if he was Bob Hartley he would just keep playing Ramo every game. He believes the more work he gets, the better his confidence will be and the better his performance.
I agree with this view, and with back to back games this weekend if Hartley starts him in both (which many expect) it is likely an indication he believes Ramo is now the guy.
Will be interesting to see if Ramo can handle the workload, and also avoid injury.

I think Ramo is already "the guy" for sure.

Yeah he already is "the guy". I don't think we should play him on back to backs. It will wear him down through out the season, and if for any chance he gets injured Id rather Hiller was at least getting occasional starts to keep him up to speed.

Keep going with him until we are a little more stable in the standings or he falters.

Oh he's the guy now. His stats are way better than everyone else, he took the demotion like an absolute pro, he has shown he can adapt and still learn (he hugs the post like a real starter now) and he's the most agile of the 3. Best stats, best attitude, most athletic.
At this point it will be impossible for him to be replaced by Hiller or Ortio because he's grown and he has the mindset. Traits the other 2 are lacking.

Even that first goal on him by Dallas. Oduya got dang lucky on that shot. Look how square he was in the splits when he tried to stop that rebound.

Credit where it is due. Ramo's been good these past few games. Right in the middle of the time when he is best. And he was lights out awesome against the Stars.
I don't like him, don't want him as a Flame for any longer than this season or even earlier. But, if he can put up games like that consistently, I don't feel the need to want to buy that plane ticket to siberia every other day.
I'm still very apprehensive about consistency though. And it'll take an extremely long run of solid play to relieve my doubts about him over all.
I just keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. When he finally reverts back to the goat I'm always expecting when he starts. I still have that feeling of inevitability every game.
At any rate, the Flames are getting good goaltending right now, he won't get high praise for this stretch, but some well earned respect is being given.

Ramo has redeemed himself from a non-NHL goalie, to the slightly-better-than-average-for-a-backup level of play he's known for.
But in no way is he an acceptable option for #1 goalie on a team with playoff aspirations.

I don't care what anyone says, but he's been playing like a #1 goalie right now. He won't keep this up all year so let's enjoy his great play while it lasts.

I just wonder what it would be like to have a goalie sustain that .920 style of play for a whole season. What if Ramo's ceiling really was elite like these last two games??? Chances of him suddenly turning a new leaf require a decimal.. But damned if I'm not dreaming of it. #1 goalies, there are 10 league wide. Generously 12.

I like Ramo. He is a team guy and is very professional in how to handle the situations. He was the guy already last year in the playoffs. Rather than looking at the goals against average, I also look at 'how' he gave up goals. Yes, there were certainly some face palms in the last 10 games, but it has been down versus how it was earlier in the season (e.g. the goal vs Winnipeg). If credits are due, I want to know how the video team works with Hartley, the goalie coach and Ramo himself.
He is the best option now.

.920+ sv%?
Elite goalie?
I'll be honest, right now I'd settle for a goalie who would get claimed if we put him on waivers.

Quick back-of-the-envelope calculation gives me a .912 sv% since his recall.

If Ramo plays .924 the rest of the season we are Home ice playoff team.

Was hearing on the Fan 960 today that Jordan Sigalet has been working with Ramo to change some bad habits. In particular, Ramo has been training himself to take advantage of his size by playing a little further back in his net. That has to be helping him not lose his goalposts, which was his most obvious weakness earlier in the year. It looks to me like the change of equipment has helped, too.
If these things (plus regained confidence) really are responsible for his improved numbers, there's a fair chance he could keep it up for the rest of the season. It would be a huge relief to see that.
