Sequel Better Than The Original
My wife and I were having a rainy day conversation, and were talking about going to see "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice". I mentioned that I'd heard that it was pretty good, but most folks felt that it "didn't QUITE" measure up to the original.
My wife quickly stated that it's a very rare sequel that is better than the original, and that set us along a path to figure out which sequels were better. There are a lot of factors to figure in, of course, but...it's an interesting question I thought I'd share here.
We were talking movies, so I only thought of those. We also agreed that 'any' sequel would count, not just a direct sequel, so you could count any of the 8 Rocky sequels, for instance. We also considered release order. So "A New Hope" would be considered the start of Star Wars, and anything after that is a sequel.
I'm curious about folks thoughts on this.

Mad Max did it twice, with The Road Warrior being a superior sequel and Fury Road being the best in the franchise later.

There’s not many.
X2. T2. Wrath of Khan. Maybe godfather 2 but I prefer the original. Most consider 2 superior though.
I also think Fury Road was better than any of the original mad max movies.
And this is a bit different but Blade Runner the Final Cut is far, far superior to the original and director’s cut.

There is an argument Back to the Future II is better than the original. It's at least as good.

Toy Story 2 is better than 1 and Toy Story 3 is better than 2.
Thor: Ragnarok is better than the first 2 (and then they took a few steps back).

Any sequel with Robin Dunne in it.
He had pretty good stretch there with Cruel Intentions 2, American Psycho 2, The Skulls 2, Au Pair 2

American Psycho 2 had nothing to do with American Psycho, really - they just chose to market it that way.
Full of Canadian actors, though

The Dark Knight
Paddington 2
Dawn of the Dead
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Does Silence of the Lambs count as a sequel? Or is it like a James Bond thing where the movies have the same characters but stand alone for the most part?
