Default Air Canada to begin clamping down on carry-on bags

TORONTO - With the busy summer travel season set to take flight, Air Canada is about to begin clamping down on carry-on baggage to ensure it meets regulations.

Starting next Monday at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, airline staff will be stationed at both check-in and security checkpoints to ensure carry-on bags meet size and weight requirements.

Bags that meet the airline's carry-on dimensions will receive a red tag, which the airline says will help reduce wait times at security and “help avoid flight delays caused by larger bags being checked at the gate.”

Good. People who think that rules don't apply to them really bug me. Next up, enforcement of the boarding procedure.

Good.

I sympathize with the desk agents though.

This is something I have been complaining about for a long time. Happy to see someone start enforcing it...Just surprised it's AC doing it and not WJ. Good on AC.

ETA: I think airlines should charge for carry-on bags, rather than checked bags. People abuse this privilege.

I wish every airline would enforce them, but that's a tough job.

Only once have I ever had my carry-on weighed, by AC here at YYC, and I was 0.2 lbs over. I was told I would have to check it, so I pulled out a hoodie and put my light jacket in - I was 0.1 under and allowed on. To me, that was a bit much, especially since it wasn't one of those massively stuffed bags, just a regulation carry-on.

When I was in Las Vegas WestJet "enforced" the carry-on policy. And if you failed, you removed stuff from your bag, made it fit in the thingy, the once you passed the agent you put your stuff back in the bag.

I prefer just carry-on. It's tough if you're travelling more than just a few days.

No waiting in lines to check your bag, no waiting at baggage claim for what seems like forever. Just walk in, and walk out.

Spirit in the US does.

Unfortunately, it requires someone to be the bad guy to individual customers, who probably won't like it at the time, but everyone will benefit if its enforced evenly over the long run, as boarding/deboarding will be way faster.

Good news as there is nothing better than sharing an aisle with the guy that has taken all of the overhead bin space

Good. I only take a regular size backpack for trips lasting a week or less. I hate seeing giant luggage on wheels being rolled down the aisle.

Good because I hate when there's no space for my bag left! I prefer carry-on to reduce waiting times for sure.
