I haven't seen this confirmed, but I have heard that the pick was sent to ensure MAF stays in Vegas and doesn't get flipped to another team.
I think they were worried he would get flipped to Philly. Also sort of explains why the Flames couldn't get in on him when it was reported he was their #1 target.
