Very sad news coming out recently that Greek-Canadian Sam Panopoulos, the inventor of the Hawaiian pizza, has passed away at age 83. The dish was created at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario in 1962 by experimentily combing savoury ham with sweet pineapple.

His legacy will be controversial. For Hawaiian pizza lovers like myself he will be considered a brilliant outside the box thinker whose creativity is responsible for one of Canada's greatest food contributions to the world. For others who consider pineapple on pizza to be blasphemous he will be considered a dangerous food rebel who should have never stepped foot in a kitchen.
