Five years later, Messier and Kurri were traded for a #4 defenseman and a project.
And they have almost no choice but to trade Gretzky as well. Either that or they won't be able to re-sign Maroon. Without Maroon, they lose much of their size up front. Without RNH, they lose much of their (already desperately thin) depth up front.
Either way, they're in bad shape.
And even though RNH is a better player than Eberle, the challenge is that they need to move the $6M cap hit, but can't take a similar cap hit back. That will force them to take something like a 3-4 defenseman plus a pick for him.
