If the Flames have more than 11 desirable young assets on the roster a couple of years from now, it will be a miracle – and they'll have the depth to stand losing one of them.

The only way the team loses a key player is if the size of the protected list is sharply reduced from 7 F + 3 D + 1 G, and I don't see that happening.

The rules this time around are only as generous as they are because the league was demanding $500 million for a franchise, and nobody was going to pungle unless they got some kind of value for money.

Even at that, the Vegas group was the only one with a viable bid. It may be a long time before we see another prospective owner with an arena deal and half a billion dollars to burn. We may never see one who's willing to spend enough money to get the existing owners to agree to lose core talent.
