My understanding is that it can only emulate the exact functions of a go plus, meaning it will only use regular poke balls. The automated functions are the unit responding to the same signals a go plus would get and sending back a simulated button press. Since The game sends a different signal to notify the unit of a stop in range vs a Pokemon in range, as indicated by the different lights and vibrations, it can automate those functions differently, but it cannot do anything beyond what a go plus with a person attached to it could do.
