Look for the warmer bays and there should be pike there. Ideally you would have a thermometer and the temperature would be around 20 celcius and they should be quite active. But, try out some top water, big chunky streamers and enjoy!

Really, you shouldn't break your rod. It can happen, but you shouldn't have to have that kind of pressure on them. Just let them run and play them a bit and you should be fine. My fishing buddy landed a 20" Rainbow on a 3wt last year. It was kind of touch and go for a spell, but it worked out!

(And if you do break your rod, I know a local guy who has a thread in the Power Ring who could get you a new one)
