There is a 50 coin per day maximum, so if you already have recieved 50 coins in the day, any pokemon returning will get you nothing.
Also, there was a few hours on Monday of this week where the system was down, and anything that returned during that time gave you 0 coins, but. I believe that these coins will eventually get to you. I'm out 41 coins for that, since I only received 9 coins on Monday, but should have maxed out.
It's frustrating sometimes, but I'm getting way more coins than I did under the old system, so I find it hard to complain too much. Under the old system, I was probably averaging 5-8 coins a day, and now I'm averaging probably 40.
