1. Because they got another 5/6 in Engelland who lives in Vegas, brings toughness and leadership
2. Because defense was the position with the most attractive players available and they took a bunch of veteran defensemen in order to flip them for picks.

The fact they passed on Kulak does not necessarily mean he wouldn't be a 5/6 on a lot of teams this upcoming season.
