I'm hoping that they do Thrawn better then the books. The books that he was in he was framed as a military genius who used a species art to understand them and then ultimately defeat them. The problem was that they gave him relatively few victories, and the ones they did give him were more along the lines he won, but he didn't overwhelm his enemies.
He was almost like the villain in Inspector Gadget of the Star Wars universe where his fleet was jumping away in retreat and he was muttering "Next Time Gadget"
I think for him to be the Thrawn that everyone really wants, he needs to kick the ever loving crap out of the Rebellion who will have no answers to his tactics, and push them to the walls of extinction.
If you look at Star Wars lore, even in the events leading up to the destruction of the Death Star the Rebellion was pretty much beaten their first real victory was the operation where they stole the Death Star Plans, but they were outgunned, outshipped and generally on the way out until Luke fired that torpedo.
