If you are getting super slow wireless speeds you are probably going to have to use something like wifi analyzer to see what kind of levels you are getting from your router.
Is your router in your basement? If so concrete will likely mess up your wifi signal strength. My recommendation is always to put up wireless AP and use the cable modem just as a cable modem. Repeaters also need at least 50% signal strength to be somewhat effective.
