Using it on a non-reinforced wall is not the best idea since Ash can easily take it out. I think you're on the right track though. If you put it on a reinforced wall and leave the ones next to it open you can easily strafe to get kills and still have something to protect you from return fire.
Jackal is really great as well. His gadget is excellent at pointing out annoying roamers and his assault rifle is amazing.
