Exactly. As long as it isn't infringing upon your neighbour or his property, you can do what you want.
I mean where do you draw the line? He doesn't like the fence you're putting up so you put up what he wants. If he doesn't like the kind of grass in your backyard do you change it? If he doesn't like the colour of your house do you change colours?
If he's not contributing his money and/or his property toward the fence, he should STFU. A good neighbour should know that. Since he doesn't know that don't worry about what he thinks.
