He'll get the league max for the minimum timeframe to take him to UFA status. Count on it. There will be 30 other teams, including the Flames, that will be lining up with an identical offer sheet. League max times five years. Gives the player the most amount of money that is allowed, and then guarantees he is available to the to the open market at the earliest moment possible. Remember, that Edmonton has the right to match, which they will, but the terms will be set by the offer sheet McDavid signs. The strategy by every team should be to get him to UFA status as quickly as possible, that way the player can pick and choose and not have the protection of Edmonton's right to match.

His agency should be recommending he wait until his contract expires and entertain all offer sheets. If they don't, they are completely screwing this kid's earning potential up. This is the best strategy to get the best money for the kid long term and get him to free agency, where he controls his destiny of who he plays with, quickest. If his representatives follow this strategy McDavid will be out of Edmonton in six years, max. Signing that contract may make the Oilers per-emptively trade him in year three or four of the contract, so they get something rather than nothing when he hits UFA status. The Oilers are screwed if his agency has any brains.
