Maybe there are other defencemen on the roster that are a bit dinged up, and they are keeping him up for insurance? With the 'playing every other night', it is going to be difficult for players nursing minor injuries to heal quickly.
Edit: I mean nursing injuries but are still in the lineup and playing.
