The vaccine for mumps only gives a 49% to 92% effectiveness for one dose and 66 to 95% effectiveness for 2 doses.

The concept of herd immunity is really what prevents the disease not individual vaccinations. The more people who get the vaccine, the tougher time the virus has spreading to other humans. The fewer, it can spread through those who are not immunized and those where the vaccination is not as effective.
