As someone who has reffed for 15 + years, I can honestly say that this isn't a bad idea. I have seen the handshake as an opportune time for players and coaches to get their digs in one last time. To me it became pointless and the kids were just doing it because it had always been done. There was minimal sincerity there at best.
As for the story about the coach making a kid well up, it happens more than you think. I help the younger refs in our community by being in the stands and supervising them, and the things that come out of a parent's mouth is disturbing. More than a handful of situations have arose where i've had to console a young kid as they skate off the ice looking to refuse to ref again.
