Don't be surprised if the Flames burn a year of Hickey's ELC to get him to sign after his college season is done.

Hickey is 21 years old in terms of the CBA definition (the CBA takes a player's age as of September 15 in the calendar year he signs an ELC). That means a 3 year ELC.

However if Hickey goes back for another year of college, he will be a 22 year old in terms of the CBA definition when the next college season is over and that means a 2 year ELC.

Flames may be willing to burn the 1st year of a 3 year deal to sign him this year instead of flirting with UFA, because technically they are going to lose that year anyways if they don't sign him this year.

The added bonus of him burning a year, is that he would be eligible for playoffs, but it would be highly unlikely they use him in the playoffs unless they go through a lot of injuries to their NHL and AHL depth. The disadvantage is that by burning a year he won't be eligible to be assigned to Stockton this season or playoffs.
