For Zelda, pretty much docked all the time. I prefer no grip at all, lets me keep my hands at my sides on the couch, which I find is more comfortable. It also makes any of the motion stuff easier, as you only move one hand. I thought I'd get a pro controller if I didn't like the grip, but now that I use them detached, I think that is even better.
