Since 2015 we've made the following picks or added the following players with those picks (15-60):
Dougie Hamilton
Oliver Kylington
Rasmus Andersson
Dillon Dube
Tyler Parsons
Curtis Lazar
2017 first
That's seven U23 players added between 15 and 60 (assuming Tre doesn't trade 2017 first away). Most would agree the four prospects are legitimate threats to be impact NHLers.
We're not exactly bleeding picks. If you go into three drafts with six U23 players returned you're well on par.
The monumentally greater issue is wasting cap space on 4th line/3rd pair players (Brouwer, Engelland, Raymond, Bollig, Bouma). By
far. If Smith is a starter, the acquisition cost is fine. If he plays no better than a backup is where it is an issue.
