I simply downloaded Ubuntu, burned it to a disk, did a quick format of the Windows laptop and ran the disk.
I dont think you need to even do a format but it seemed to work great for me.
What version are you trying to use?
/edit I dont use a dual boot option...only have Ubuntu on the laptop.

I think the issue I have is the dual boot. Linux itself is night and day better than windows. I think I should just ditch windows and go full Linux.
I have 12.04 installed.
The PC is worthless as is. I'll have to figure out how to install from USB, as I don't have a cd Rom drive.
