Strapping Young Lad and Opeth are two of my favorite for heavier music. Arch Enemy is also good. Not a huge Cradle of Filth fan.
Devin Townsend Project is amazing, but maybe not HEAVY (heavy) METAL.
With a lot of bands stradling genres right now, it's hard to clearly define a lot of bands.
Ayreon also amazing but definitely not heavy metal.
If thou are interested in local bands I would suggest you try out:
Mark of Cain:

And for softer/post metal (Tool/APC styles) check out:
Ahnabith Gish:

The myspace pages have better song samples. Junix for Ahnabith, and most of the samples for MoC have been remastered and in some circumstances, completely recorded in our very own TPM studios. Enjoy! Also if you like what you here, these bands can use your supports, often playing shows at Vern's, The Underground, etc.
We'll be starting our first full length album and label contracts with one of the above mentioned bands very soon. Recently we have just been helping bands with EP's.
