That's kinda the point of what everyone has been talking about the NDP never seeing itself in the PM's office or the ratchet of power in a minority. Their policies if adopted in whole are absolutely absurd. They are best served as the shrill and hysterical "Will anyone please think of the children" voice in the opposition corner that dulls the blunt end of some Conservative and/or Liberal policies.

In this case, the oil sands debate, when the NDP refers to 'economists' they are essentially talking about the one's who sponsored the CAW's report this spring called 'Rethinking Canada's Auto Industry.' The NDP wholeheartedly endorsed this paper. It calls for essentially kneecapping the currency by haulting foriegn investment in commodities, and other levels of federal intervention. It also proposes the Government start it's own crown corporation to build cars, and create new tariffs on imports, and essentially base the future of the economy on building cars. Pretty wacky and stupid stuff!

In the NDP's mind the pinnacle of human achievement is drilling in bolts on an assembly line for $30/hr in a world where the lowest wage any service industry pays is a "living wage" of $15/hr, that pretty much inflates the crap out of any goods and services people buy.
