Sixty-nine per cent of Canadian families with at least one child under 16 are dual-earner families and with a few exception/unless you're a government employee today is a work day. The vast majority of people are not going to be able to make it to a parent/teacher interview today without gross inconvenience, so I can't fathom why they would plan it like that.
All the schools my kids have attended (four now) scheduled interviews over the day and also in the evening. While I agree many (most?) people word 'regular' M-F 8-5 jobs a significant number of would be working shifts, weekends etc. and thus be available for mid week appointments.
