I'm assuming the oilers want term, so a shorter term offer sheet works against them as teams may be willing to offer the same annual salary in a shorter term, which the player might jump at because it gets them to UFA earlier and younger. In that case all the oilers can do is match the offer and then potentially lose the player a year or two earlier. (Can't remember if the offer sheet term limit is 6 or 7 years)
