You can tell chuck derives his self worth from his intelligence, that's what we've seen from him now in a variety of interpersonal scenes. I think he is threatened by Jimmy's intelligence. He is initially proud of Jimmy for the sandpiper case but then seems to grow increasingly possessive of the case himself, eventually calling in his law firm partner to oversee it (and by proxy, get much of the credit).
At think at some level this is a base need for Chuck to prove that he can outsmart Jimmy.
