What's the file system on the drive? If it's FAT32, the limit is 4 GB per file. You need something modern like NTFS (Windows), HFS+ (Mac), or something else (EXT2/UFS) to have > 4 GB files.

I'm not sure if the player came with the drive (it sounds like it did), but I've seen WD 1 TB drives shipped with FAT32 partitions since they are the most compatible, despite suffering from the 4 GB limitation.
