I believe there is DME (Distance Measuring Equipment)? Their altitude to runway threshold distance would have been noticeably off the mark.
Certainly not as in your face, as seeing the glide slope being way off, but you would think monitoring distance/altitude would be top of mind while descending through cloud cover toward minimums.
