Most of those guys you listed raced in the old IndyCar series aka USAC IndyCar aka CART. That era was mostly road courses/street circuits with a smattering of flattish ovals like Indy, Milwaukee and Nazareth. Much different than Texas, Vegas (RIP Dan Wheldon), and Charlotte.
The only former F1 driver of any worth that came over to what is now Indy Car after F1 was Reubens Barrichello who said f that and quit after a year.
Indy 500 qualifying is basically a suicide mission. Sebastian Bourdais is lucky to be alive.
Open wheeled cars on ovals is lunacy. They don't even race sports cars on ovals in the US. Racing is dangerous enough as it is, IndyCar oval racing is beyond insane. They shouldn't be racing on any oval bigger than Phoenix or Iowa.
